Model A’s and Biplanes Tour
Saturday, May 6th
by Don Cole

It was sure nice to have
fair weather for our tour, on clear and dry roads, to
Frazier Lake Air Field. We departed at about 10:05 am,
with a parade of 24 Model A’s and about 6 moderns. In
route down Monterey Highway we collected Dell (in his
nice Red and Black Coupe) just as we came to Morgan
Hill. Somewhere in Gilroy part of our group bypassed
downtown Gilroy and arrived at the airfield before the
rest of us. We won’t mention any names (right Jay).
Once
at the airfield we come to find out one car had a belt
problem and the other was experiencing some major engine
noise related problems. Unfortunately, that one went
home on a tow truck. All cars completed the tour to the
airfield including one more A from the Wildman’s. All
said we had a very good showing of 26 great looking
Model A’s all parked neatly in 2 rows along the taxi way
for the hangers on a typical California spring day.
At the airfield there
were 10 rows of airplane hangers with about 1/3 of the
hangers open for people to look at the planes. We found
the owners of the airplanes were very open, about
letting us look up close, and talking about their pride
and joy. In one hanger we
found two vintage flight simulators for training WW II
pilots. Another note of Frazier Lake Air Field, built in
about 1972-1973, some of the hangers were transported
here from older airports built in the 1920s-1930s.
Thanks to all of our members supporting the BBQ, there
was enough to eat for all.
After seeing the airplanes and the amount of time and effort needed to properly restore an airplane, I find restoring a Model A, a much simpler task.
